The History of the Diamond

The diamond is the most popular and valuable of all precious stones.  They are a symbol of wealth, elegance and seen as the classic accompaniment to any jewelry piece.   The diamond is an extremely famous material in modern society, yet few will know where and when it originated.

The first recorded presence of the diamond was around 3,000 years ago in India, proving that ever since the diamond emerged it has become a timeless classic.  In ancient times, they were said to have magical properties and kept as talismans.  People would carry them with them to provide them with protection during battles and to warn off evil spirits.  They were also admired because they reflected the light, many believed that they were the teardrops of Gods or fragments of stars.

Diamond cutting did not take place until around the 14th century so diamonds were rarely worn as an accessory. It wasn't until the 15th century that the diamond was ever introduced as part of an engagement ring.  However, only royalty possessed the precious stone at this stage. The ring was placed on the third finger of the left hand as the ancient Egyptians believed that a vein flowing through that finger, referred to as 'the vein of love' was directly connected to the heart.

Diamonds were originally found in sands surrounding rivers but in the 19th century mining in dry ground commenced after diamonds were found underground far from water.  As diamonds began to become less associated with mythical powers and more with their value, causing miners to begin swallowing them in order to take them from the mines.  In order to prevent this from occurring, mine owners would cause them to believe that the diamond was poisonous.

The reputation and value of the diamond increased as the years went on until they became widespread as they are today.  Despite their availability in jewelers, they are still seen as something rare and precious to anyone who buys them.  Although thankfully, you do not need to be a king or queen to have them.  Whether they really have mythical properties remains to seen but they certainly make a magical gift for someone special.  A diamond is a strong and durable stone which should mean that a diamond is for life, so even though they are an expensive item they will really be a  girl's loyal, best friend.
